The New Digg: What it Means For Power Users & Publishers

The new version of Digg has changed the playing field for two of its biggest constituents: power users and publishers. We discuss this with a long-time Digg power user.

The latest version of social news site Digg is currently in restricted beta, with a further 20,000 users added at the beginning of July. The new version adds the ability to 'follow' people or publishers, via a feature called "My News." This will be the default Digg homepage and it's prompted many to compare the new Digg to Twitter and Facebook. Another big change is that publishers may now automatically submit their content. This changes the game for both power users and publishers, because previously the secret to getting onto the Digg front page was for a power user to submit the story. That's no longer the case.

How iPhone 4 Could Change Augmented Reality

iphone4_150_jun10.jpgWhen Apple announced iOS 4.0 earlier this year, some additions to the SDK (software development kit) caught the attention of augmented reality (AR) developers - specifically, open access to the phone's camera APIs. But with the introduction of the new hardware in the iPhone 4 made this past Monday, the possibilities for AR on the popular smartphone skyrocketed. Today I had the opportunity to chat about the device's impact on AR with Stefan Misslinger, lead iPhone developer for metaio, one of the leading AR companies and makers of the mobile AR browser junaio.

Enhanced Image Tracking

The application needs to be able to analyze the data being taken in from the camera in order to properly overlay 3D objects into space, but previously this functionality wasn't available for iPhone developers. When Apple announced iOS 4.0, the inclusion of access to live camera data in the iPhone SDK provided AR developers with the ability to bring image tracking to the iPhone.

Cross reference a person's Twitter friendships with their Foursquare favorites with their Hunch.com articulated "taste graph" and what do you get? Interesting personalized restaurant recommendations, for one thing.

Taste-gathering startup Hunch is experimenting with a recommendation service that cross references social graph connections on other services with the large set of unusual questions its users have answered. Questions like "do you like facial hair on men? Yes? Well, 48% of our users have said that." The end result is a simple prototype website where you enter a city and your Twitter username and Hunch will show you Foursquare venues it thinks you'll like. Or at least it thinks that people on Hunch who are like your friends on Twitter tend to like those places, on Foursquare. Crazy? Maybe not.
